Flora Sanzotti Jan.15,1910- Nov. 21,2009

Flora Sanzotti was born Flora Scialabba January 15,1910, the third child and only daughter of Gandolfo and Maria Scialabba, on Mercer Street in the West end of Butler. Upton gazing at his daughter for the first time, Gandolfo choose "Flower" as her name. Flora and her three brothers(all deceased) grew up in a home rich in Sicilian food, customs and heritage. Her parents emphasized education, music, and good citizenship as the best training, and gave her an enormous sense of family. Her three musician brothers all had careers in bands and orchestras. Flora attended public schools in Butler; Jefferson Street, West -End, McKean Street, and Butler High School, graduating in 1928. Shewas briefly employed by the Friedman Grocery Store on West Jefferson Street.
Flora married Bruno Sanzotti in 1930 and they made their home in Butler; first on Muntz Ave. then Elm Street,, Jefferson Street and finally the Old Monroe Hotel on the corner of Jefferson and Monroe Streets in Butler. Bruno and Flora operated the hotel from 1945 to 1980. Their two children Sara Jane (Vero, Leonard deceased) and Vincent James (Claudette Joyce) were both born and raised in Butler.
After thirty-five years in the hotel/resturant business, Bruno and Flora retired on a two acre plot of land next to the Slippery Rock Creek in Kiester,Pa. Bruno passed away in June of 1982 and Flora lived alone at 530 North Main Street, the Butler Townhouse , until 2006, when she moved into Newhaven Court Assisted Living Facility in Center Township Butler County. Attendance records will show that she was one of the most active residents at Newhaven. She attended exercise class, crossword sessions and bingo everyday. While Flora waited for an activity to begin, she did not sit idly by. She knitted, crocheted or read.
The most important thing to Flora during this past century has been her family. Two children, nine grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren; she remembered the birth date of each one and never failed to congratulate each one via a card. She was a remarkable woman who was much loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Trip out West

We had a great trip west September 6-20, visiting Kathy and LuAnn. Our visit to Surprise included Sedona, Cave Creek, and the Desert Botanical Gardens. Then a drive to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, two days in Vegas and one night in Tahoe. We spent several days touring the wine country of Napa and Sonoma Valleys with an expert guide, LuAnn and Bill. A wonderful dinner with John McGuirk at his Santa Rosa home was a high point. We arrived home Sunday 9/20 very tired but happy for having spent the time with our two nieces. We love you all, Mom and Dad

Bruno Walks

I am sorry for all of you out there that have been waiting to see a video of Bruno walking, but I have not had a chance to post this until now. Bruno has been walking for about the past 3 weeks and is pretty stable. Although, when he really wants to get somewhere, he crawls. We are hoping to see you all this weekend in Butler. Take care. We love you all.

Damien and Kate in Berlin

We visited Damien and Kate at their new home in Berlin MD. May 14-16. The house is very nice and very roomy. They both seem happy with their new digs. Mom and I helped some with landscaping and house washing. Also we enjoyed some good food together and a few movies. The area where they now reside is attractive and rural, but close to Ocean City and the beach. A note to Maria and Natalie, riding horses are stabled on the farm adjacent to Damien's house. We had a pleasant trip both down and back, about six and one-half hours, 394 miles. We wish them good luck and happiness for the future. Dad

Ellen and Lou visit Bruno

We had an excellent visit with Aunt Ellen and Uncle Lou the other night as they passed through State College on their way to Boston to visit Jeff and his family. They are very strong and look very healthy. Aunt Ellen brought bannana bread and oatmeal cookies, most of which are already gone.

Bruno took right to Aunt Ellen. Lou said that Ellen would be happy just staying and playing with Bruno for a few days.

Bruno Breaks Out

Bruno took his first walk on the sidewalk on Saturday. He is going to be quite the walker if he would just bend his knees. We will have to wait to see if he swings his arms, though.
